Mendes learned to play guitar by watching YouTube tutorial videos at the age of 13 in 2012. Less than a year later he started posting cover videos on the social video app Vine in 2013 and gained millions of views and followers in a few months after he posted a cover of ''As long as you love me'' by justin bieber. By August 2014, he was the third most-followed musician on Vine.

''I was a little bit scared so i deleted the app but downloaded it again because i enjoyed what i was doing'' - Shawn mendes about what he did after he found out that his vine got viral.

Artist manager Andrew Gertler discovered Mendes online in November 2013, bringing him to Island Records in January 2014. He officially signed in May 2014

I think that it's amazing how shawn went from a 6 seconds vine to sold out shows world wide but he worked so hard for it so he deserves it.
